How Healthy Kids Day® 2026 Made a Lasting Impact Across Central Florida
On April 18, 2026, the YMCA hosted Healthy Kids Day® across the country, a free community event focused on helping children and families build healthy habits for life. For more than 30 years, this annual celebration has created opportunities for kids to stay active, engaged, and connected as they head into the summer months.
At a time when many families are seeking safe, affordable, and enriching opportunities to support their children’s well-being, Healthy Kids Day® plays an important role in expanding access to experiences that nurture growth in spirit, mind, and body. This year, 14 YMCA of Central Florida locations hosted free, community-focused events that welcomed families of all backgrounds and created meaningful opportunities for every child to learn, grow, and belong.
Each center showcased the depth of YMCA programs in action. Kids and families experienced Group Exercise classes, connected with Personal Trainers, engaged in Swim Programs including swim lessons, water safety instruction, and recreational swim, while also exploring a wide range of YMCA programs that help kids thrive. Across the day, obstacle courses, scavenger hunts, and live entertainment further highlighted how the Y brings people together to support healthy living and community connection.
Our brand new Fit Truk also made an appearance at the Leonard and Marjorie Williams Family YMCA, bringing a mobile gym experience that delivers small-group training directly into the community. This innovative approach increases access to structured fitness opportunities, supports youth physical and mental well-being, encourages positive after-school engagement, and strengthens our community.
Healthy Kids Day® also highlighted the importance of literacy as a foundation for long-term success. Through our partnership with the New Worlds Reading Initiative, four centers, Roper, Frank DeLuca, Osceola, and Lake Nona, connected 730 children and families with resources that support reading at home and help build a lifelong love of learning.
By providing access to free books and educational tools, this initiative helps remove barriers to learning and empowers families to support their children’s literacy development. Together, we are helping ensure more children have the opportunity to build strong reading skills, foster confidence, and open pathways to lifelong learning.
Healthy Kids Day® is more than a single event; it is a starting point for families to engage with YMCA programs and resources that support their well-being.
This year’s event created meaningful outcomes across Central Florida:
- 5,400+ community members across Central Florida celebrated Healthy Kids Day®
- 280+ families joined the YMCA and became part of a supportive community
- 135 children enrolled in summer camp, gaining access to safe, enriching experiences during the summer months
- 203 children registered for youth sports, building confidence, teamwork, and healthy habits
- 138 children signed up for swim lessons, gaining critical water safety skills that can save lives
To further support water safety, each new swim lesson participant received a “Let’s Go Swimming” swag bag including a YMCA beach towel and SPF stick, helping families feel prepared and confident around the water.
We were also grateful to partner with Gatorade, whose donation of 9,000 bottles of Lower Sugar Gatorade helped keep families hydrated and energized throughout the day.
For many families, Healthy Kids Day® was more than just a day of fun; it was an introduction to a community where children can grow, feel supported, and truly belong, reflecting the YMCA’s commitment to strengthening communities.
We will continue creating opportunities for children and families across Central Florida to stay active, build confidence, and develop lifelong healthy habits, while standing alongside our community to ensure every child has the support, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive this summer and beyond.
