Reclaim Your Health After Diagnosis or Recovery

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA empowers adult cancer survivors to improve their quality of life through an organized program that combines a fitness routine with emotional support.

In 2007, LIVESTRONG partnered with the YMCA of the USA to create Livestrong at the YMCA, a 12-week physical activity program designed to get survivors back on their feet. LIVESTRONG partnered with researchers from Yale University and Dana Farber Cancer Institute to study the outcome of the program and found that men and women experienced significant increases in physical activity, overall quality of life, and fitness performance. On top of that, participants were able to decrease their cancer-related fatigue.

Program Overview

The Y partnered with LIVESTRONG to help cancer survivors begin the journey toward recovery. This program offers survivors a safe, supportive environment to participate in activities centered around improving physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

What to Expect

YMCAs are creating communities among survivors that are guiding participants through safe physical activity, helping them build supportive relationships, and reducing stress. We do this by cultivating an atmosphere that embraces compassion, understanding, and awareness. Participants will receive exercise plans based on their activity level to help them ease back into a fitness routine. There will also be weekly group sessions for added emotional and spiritual support.

Cost

This 12-week program is free to join, and is open to cancer survivors and their caregivers. Participants don’t have to be current members of the Y.

Goals

Build muscle mass and strength, improve flexibility and stamina, increase self-confidence, and expand your support system.

Prerequisite

Inform your physician and secure medical clearance. Patients currently undergoing treatment may still participate if medical clearance is provided.

Group Leaders

Partner with qualified Y team members.

Our certified Y team members who conduct group sessions have been specifically trained to work with cancer survivors and patients. As exercise experts, our Y team understands the unique needs and concerns participants may have and will help them address these needs to help heal their spirits, minds, and bodies in a safe, supportive, and respectful environment. Y team members will also conduct pre- and post-session evaluations to help participants track their progress.

On my first day of chemotherapy, the nurse handed me a flyer about LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.

“As soon as I started LIVESTRONG, I felt alive again and wanted to get back to my normal activities. It made me aware of how my mind and body are connected. Even though I still felt weak in the beginning, it brought back my energy and willingness to exercise.” Thereza Garziano
