Building Strength, Confidence, and Character

There’s more to movement than just a workout. At the YMCA of Central Florida, our classes and programs are opportunities to move your body, build confidence, develop healthy habits, and connect with your community. As part of our Fit Together campaign, we’re introducing you to the incredible Group Exercise instructors who help bring movement, connection, and community to life at the Y.

Meet Seth, one of our instructors at the Y! Seth teaches martial arts and character development for kids, combining movement with important life skills like balance, strength, respect, and discipline.

For Seth, martial arts is about more than learning movements or building physical strength. It’s an opportunity for kids to develop confidence, learn how to challenge themselves, and build skills they can carry with them beyond the classroom.

And while the physical side of movement is important, Seth believes the Y is about something even bigger: feeling welcomed, connected, and seen.

Martial arts can be a great way for kids to stay active while developing skills that support them both inside and outside the Y.

Through movement and practice, kids can work on:

  • Balance and coordination as they learn new movements and techniques.
  • Strength and endurance as they challenge their bodies and build physical confidence.
  • Discipline and focus as they practice skills and work toward their goals.
  • Respect and character as they learn how to work with instructors and fellow participants.
  • Confidence as they try new things, overcome challenges, and recognize their own progress.

Every child develops at their own pace, and there’s value in giving them a place where they can learn, make mistakes, keep trying, and celebrate their progress along the way.

For Seth, one of the most meaningful parts of teaching is seeing how the lessons learned in class can extend beyond the Y.

Martial arts provides opportunities for kids to practice patience, listen, stay focused, respect others, and keep working when something feels challenging. Those are skills that can help them at school, at home, with friends, and throughout their lives.

The goal isn’t just to become stronger physically. It’s to help kids become more confident, capable, and respectful people.

And sometimes, progress looks different than mastering a new technique. It might be a child having the confidence to try something for the first time, encouraging a classmate, or sticking with something that didn’t come easily.

Those moments matter, too.

For Seth, the Y experience goes beyond what happens during class.

It’s about walking through the doors and feeling welcomed, connected, and seen.

That sense of belonging is an important part of what makes the Y different. Whether someone is joining a class, learning a new skill, meeting a new friend, or simply becoming familiar with the people around them, the Y creates opportunities to feel like you’re part of something.

At the Y, movement can be the starting point, but connection is what helps make the experience meaningful.

At the YMCA of Central Florida, we believe getting fit is about more than physical activity. It’s about caring for your spirit, mind, and body while building relationships and becoming part of your community.

From martial arts and character development to Group Exercise and other ways to move, there are so many ways to find something that works for you and your family.

And just like Seth reminds us, sometimes the most important part of the experience is simply knowing that when you walk through the doors, you’re welcome here.
