Applications Available for the 2021 Arthur Pappy Kennedy Scholarship

Hosted by the YMCA of Central Florida, the Southwest Orlando Jaycees, and the City of Orlando’s Martin Luther King Commission, the annual Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Prayer Breakfast commemorates the legacies of civil rights pioneers Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy, Orlando’s first African American City Council Member.

Normally, the breakfast is held in-person at the First Baptist Church of Orlando. However, for the safety of our neighbors, the Y hosted the 2021 event virtually with a pre-recorded video that you can watch on-demand. During the video, we announced that the YMCA of Central Florida and the Southwest Orlando Jaycees will award a $1,500 Arthur Pappy Kennedy Scholarship to one deserving student!

The scholarship is designed to assist a minority high school senior who’s planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution in the Fall of 2021, but may lack the finances to cover all of the cost associated with attendance and/or books. Applicants must be in good academic standing, demonstrate strong leadership skills, and have some involvement with community service initiatives.
