At the YMCA of Central Florida, the safety and well-being of every child is our highest priority. Every day, our staff and volunteers create a culture of safety through trusted policies, ongoing training, and proactive prevention practices.
Each April, during Child Abuse Prevention Month, we strengthen this commitment by participating in Five Days of Action® (April 13–17, 2026) a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness and empowering trusted adults to help protect children from sexual abuse.
2026 Focus: Digital Safety
This year’s theme, “Keeping Kids Safe in the Digital Space,” highlights the growing importance of protecting children online.
Social media, texting, gaming platforms, and apps offer connection and learning, but they also introduce new risks that families must understand and navigate together.
This year’s campaign focuses on helping families:
- Understand online risks and warning signs
- Recognize inappropriate behavior and grooming
- Set healthy boundaries and monitor digital use
- Encourage open conversations about online safety
Through partnerships with organizations like Praesidium, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), Lauren’s Kids, and National Children’s Alliance, families gain access to expert-backed tools to safeguard children.
Our Commitment: Praesidium Accreditation
Did you know the YMCA of Central Florida is currently undergoing Praesidium Accreditation? This process reflects our ongoing commitment to the highest standards in child abuse prevention. Through Praesidium’s rigorous assessment, training, and policy development, we are strengthening the safeguards that protect every child and teen in our care.
Know. See. Respond.
KNOW: How Abuse Happens
Abuse is often committed by someone a child knows and trusts. It may begin with subtle boundary violations and escalate over time. Education is one of the strongest tools for prevention.
SEE: Warning Signs
Warning signs may include:
- Anxiety, depression, or withdrawal
- Sudden changes in behavior or personality
- Aggression or regression (such as nightmares or bed-wetting)
- Loss of interest in activities or friendships
Early recognition can make a life-changing difference.
RESPOND: To Prevent Harm
If a child discloses abuse or you suspect something is wrong:
- Stay calm and listen
- Take the child seriously
- Report your concerns immediately
You do not need proof, reasonable suspicion is enough to take action.
Monitoring Digital Use Matters
Did you know that 1 in 5 children online may experience unwanted sexual solicitation?
As children spend more time online, staying informed about digital platforms, gaming environments, and social media is essential. Setting boundaries, monitoring usage, and having ongoing conversations helps create safer online experiences.
How You Can Take Action
Protecting children is a shared responsibility. You can:
- Talk with your child about boundaries and online safety
- Ask youth-serving organizations about child protection policies
- Learn the signs of abuse and grooming
- Stay engaged in your child’s digital world
- Speak up if something doesn’t feel right
