Charlie Roper and Kevin Bolding discussing Legacy Planning at the Roper YMCA

First Friday Conversations

In our previous discussions, we’ve explored how purpose and leadership drive meaningful change across Central Florida. This month, we’re looking at another powerful element that shapes our community: legacy and planning.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Charlie Roper, a longtime Winter Garden resident and dedicated YMCA volunteer whose family has made an incredible imprint on our city and our Y community.

“Giving back to your community is how you express your love and appreciation for the community that you live in.”

Charlie Roper, YMCA Volunteer & Community Leader

In this episode, Charlie reflects on his family’s deep roots with the Y—including his mother, Barbara Roper, who served as the very first female board chair of the YMCA of Central Florida and the YMCA of the USA board. We dive into what it means to lead by example, open up meaningful family conversations about estate planning and legacy, and build a welcoming community where members look out for one another.
