Water Safety for Kids: How the YMCA’s Test, Mark, Protect System Keeps Swimmers Safe

Learn how the YMCA of Central Florida’s swim assessments and color-coded wristband system work together to keep children safe in and around the water.

Water Safety Starts Before the First Splash

At the YMCA of Central Florida, water safety isn’t just a rule, it’s a culture that’s built into every swim program and camp day. During National Water Safety Month, we’re shining a light on one of our most important safety practices: Test, Mark, Protect.

If you’ve ever noticed kids wearing red, yellow, or green wristbands at the pool and wondered what they mean, you’re not alone. For our staff, it’s second nature. For Central Florida families, it’s a powerful safety tool worth understanding.

This simple system helps ensure every child is swimming in the right area, with the right level of supervision, every time they enter the water.

What Is Test, Mark, Protect?

Think of it as a quick translation guide between a child’s swim ability and a lifeguard’s line of sight.

Before swimming, each child completes a free swim assessment. Based on their skills, they receive a color-coded wristband that signals where they can safely swim.

🟢 Green Wristband

Strong swimmers who pass the swim test
✔ Access to all pool areas, including deep water

🟡 Yellow Wristband

Developing swimmers with basic skills
✔ Shallow water access with close supervision

🔴 Red Wristband

Beginner swimmers still building confidence
✔ Shallow areas only, with a parent or guardian nearby

No guesswork. No assumptions. Just clear, instant communication that keeps everyone safer.

Why Swim Assessments Matter

A child’s confidence in the water doesn’t always match their capability, and that gap is where risks can live.

Our trained aquatics staff evaluate essential skills like:

  • Floating on the back
  • Treading water
  • Swimming a short distance independently

These quick assessments are rooted in national safety standards and help us place each swimmer in the safest environment possible.

It’s not about passing or failing. It’s about matching ability with safety.

From Wristbands to Real Skills

While wristbands guide safety in the moment, swim lessons build safety for life.

At the Y, kids learn:

  • How to safely enter and exit the water
  • Breath control and floating techniques
  • Foundational swim strokes
  • Water awareness and basic rescue concepts

Whether your child is just getting comfortable in the water or refining their technique, swim lessons are the most effective way to reduce risk and build confidence.

A Safe Summer Camp Experience

Pool time is a highlight of the YMCA summer camps—and Test, Mark, Protect is woven into every splash.

Here’s how it works during camp:

  • Swim tests happen at the start of camp
  • Staff can instantly identify each child’s ability level
  • Activities are structured based on wristband groups
  • Extra supervision is provided where it’s needed most

The result? Kids enjoy the water freely, while safety stays front and center.

Water Safety Tips for Families

Water safety doesn’t stop at the pool gate. A few simple habits can make a big difference:

  • Always keep eyes on your child near water—no distractions
  • Assign a “Water Watcher” during gatherings
  • Encourage kids to swim with a buddy
  • Start swim lessons early
  • Reinforce pool rules regularly

Safety works best when it’s shared. Take our Water Watcher Safety Pledge to keep children safe in and around water.

Building Confidence, One Swim at a Time

At the YMCA of Central Florida, we believe every child deserves to feel confident in the water, and every parent deserves peace of mind.

Test, Mark, Protect is more than a system. It’s a promise: that safety comes first, fun follows close behind, and every swimmer is supported at their level.

Before your next visit, stop by the pool deck and ask about it. Because the best summer memories start with feeling safe in the water.
