Ages 3+ Years

In Swim Strokes A, students will learn additional water safety skills.

Students enrolling in Swim Strokes must be able to swim an entire length of the pool unassisted. Although they’ve mastered the fundamentals, their developmental levels determine which skills we introduce and build on as they progress. Skills developed in Swim Strokes can help prevent chronic diseases, improve social and emotional well-being, increase their cognitive awareness, and foster a lifelong love of physical activity. To maximize safety, lifeguards are always on the pool deck during lessons.

Swim Stages

Our Swim Basics lessons encompass stages 3–6 of the YMCA swimming curriculum. The student’s developmental levels determine which skills we introduce and build on as they progress.

Swim Strokes

Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

Swim Strokes A will consist of stages 3–4, while Swim Strokes B will consist of stages 5–6.

3 Water Stamina

The final stage teaches students how to swim to safety from a longer distance should they accidentally fall into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated action between arms and legs.

4 Stroke Introduction

Students in stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.

New Lesson Format!

In order to better serve our Aquatics participants, we’ve restructured our registration process to provide more flexibility. Now, you can customize your swim lesson schedule by selecting the number of lessons per week, and days and times that work best for you!

Swim sessions are available in packages of four lessons (one lesson per week in a one-month period). To increase the number of lessons per week, you’ll simply add the additional day/time selections to your cart and proceed to check out. There is no guarantee that your child will have the same instructor for different days of the week, our lessons are curriculum-based. Each student will learn to master the skills for the Stage they are in while experiencing varied learning techniques.
